From the jungles of Indonesia to the very heart of New York City comes a plague that kills 100 percent of its victims. Medicine's greatest nightmare, this modern Black Death is caused by the most virulent and uncontrollable mutant virus humanity has ever witnessed. And medicine can do nothing to stop its merciless spread.
Scientist Debra Hart and her team of experts are tasked by the United Nations to stop the disease. Racing against time, they must find the cause and the cure and figure out why this deadly disease - spread by bats - is killing thousands in cities across the globe. Debra and her team will struggle to stop the disease from spreading to millions more, even if it means killing off every bat alive.
But fighting to prevent her are manic animal rights' activists who rail against species genocide, even if it means risking the deaths of human beings. And hidden behind a cloak of secrecy is a crazed academic who'll even kill top American government officials to save one living creature. This is the nightmare scenario that Debra faces as the public becomes so terrified of bats that entire communities become vigilantes.

First para cites three unforgettable/indescribable historical moments. One is the liberation of a concentration camp and the revelation of the Nazi 'action' against the Jews. One is the destruction of the twin towers in New York on 9/11. The middle one (and I have returned the book so I can't quote directly) is the moment when John Glenn left the bounds of earth and stepped on the surface of another world. That's when I stopped reading.
From the back flap, I see the author is about my age. Old enough to remember John Glenn - and Neil Armstrong.

Bat out of Hell An Eco Thriller (Audible Audio Edition) Alan Gold Kristin Price Audible Studios Books Reviews
this whole book could have been written in 15 pages. wordy...repetition...driving home a point 100 times that we understood the first time. writers are no longer paid by the word--or are they?
What's not to love - being scared whit-less by a story that encompasses all the current REAL medical facts and then throws in bats carrying Ebola-like disease? Yipes. Like a horror movie, you cringe and squirm, but the pages flip by and there is a ray of hope... and then the author throws a curve with whacko people hell bent on taking the law into their own hands. Apocolypse? Almost, then... oh, heck, I won't ruin the story.
Suggestion Try not to read on a summer evening on the front porch, your ears will be tuning in to sounds... shivers.
This may not be a book for environmentalists, or bat lovers, but for the rest of us (somewhere in-between) this is a hell of a story, filled with some of science's worst nightmares. We've had good books on epidemics, even a few good bat stories, but Gold's "Bat Out of Hell" goes about it the right way, throwing in enough "what ifs?" to make you suspicious of even a garden mouse. I like Gold's writing and his tone. It's an interesting book, and maybe—just maybe—it will help us better understand both sides of each issue, rather than railing against the obvious culprit. Nice work by a clever writer.
Bat Out Of Hell by Alan Gold begins with an Ebola like virus in a village in Indonesia, which then spreads rapidly across Europe and Asia before coming to the U.S. where it takes the lives of a group of children in New Jersey. With a mortality rate of one hundred percent, fear soon follows. Hot on the path of this new epidemic is doctor Debra Hart, the head of Virus Transmission Analysis for the CDC in Atlanta.
While she attempts to make headway with political leaders and control the spread of the infection, an animal rights group known as CHAT or Citizens for Humane Treatment Of Animals attempts to derail her efforts. Spearheading the CHAT movement is president Tom Pollard. When he learns an attempt will be made to eradicate colonies of bats nationwide,Tom seizes the opportunity to put CHAT in the headlines. To the general public CHAT is known for it’s somewhat radical views and protests. But Tom fears something worse than bad publicity, something worse than government interference. He fears a man by the name of Stuart Chalmers.
Bat Out Of Hell takes the reader on a scary ride from the jungles of Indonesia to our back door.
Hot on the heels of last year’s Ebola outbreaks which saturated the local news, this story may hit close to home.
While the concept of an outbreak of this type is a very real threat in this day and age, what’s even scarier are the people who seek to benefit from the misfortune of others like Tom and Stuart.
Alan Gold did a superb job of bringing the reality of an Ebola like virus to the pages of Bat Out Of Hell. In this page turning novel,we’re submersed in the race to discover the cure, we’re frustrated by the political red tape, and we anxiously await the outcome of the eco-terrorists agenda.
While the story does have a few slow moments and a lot of minor characters, it maintains a steady pace. There’s plenty of suspense,a few plot twists, and some poetic justice in Bat Out Of Hell. Classified as an eco-thriller,it definitely lives up to the name.
Final thoughts
Bat out Of Hell..it’s not just the bats you have to fear!
We give Bat Out Of Hell 3 out of 5 stars for it’s solid story, well written characters and suspense. While this was my first experience with Alan Gold’s work, I’ll be looking forward to his future projects.
