History of the Sandwich Islands (1843)
History of the Sandwich Islands edition by Sheldon Dibble Crafts Hobbies Home eBooks
Sheldon Dibble was a minister, a teacher, and a historian. He encouraged his Hawaiian students to go out and record the history and customs of Hawaii. His students now stand as the primary historians of Hawaii. Sheldon also wrote his own history of Hawaii. It is hard, straight work. Sheldon does not sugar coat his idea of Hawaiian History. He does not hide his contempt for the superstition, or the degraded state of the culture as he saw it. He is not politically correct. His work discusses many things that other works do not. He talks of infanticide, the oppressive and murderous rule of the Ali'i, the debasing and insane superstition, and much else. Topics that most other historians avoid, or recount with rationalization.Dibble is not always accurate in some basic aspects of Hawaiian history. He mixes the chronology, provides inaccurate historical accounts, and often misinterprets the actions of historical figures. It provides a wealth of reasons to dismiss his work. But Dibble's history is profound nevertheless. However it must be read along side the works of his students and those Hawaiian historians who followed; Kamakau, I'i, and Fornander to name a very few.
If you are a reader of Hawaiian History Dibbles work is a must read, and a great addition to your library. If you are looking for an overview of Hawaiian History you are better served with a history written later, more accurate, and less controversial.

History of the Sandwich Islands edition by Sheldon Dibble Crafts Hobbies Home eBooks Reviews
Valuable content but the conversion into kindle format was awful!
If you want to know what was happening in Hawaii before missionary contact, and after, this is a must read book. You won't find anything like this in Hawaiian, because Hawaiian was only a spoken language at the time. The missionaries took the time and effort to give them a written language that could be read. The transformation from a pagan to a Christian society is miraculous. Anyone who wants to return to the past polytheistic, kapu system must be a complete fool!!!
